What we say about ourselves
In November, 2009 our congregation completed a survey that was designed to elicit demographic data about ourselves and some opinions about what we appreciate most in our church. In summary, we have weekly attendance at both worship services combined of 150-180. It is estimated that one third of our congregation are “snow birds” residing in Florida 3 to 6 months of the year only. Of the respondents to the survey, 55% were male; the group was well educated with the majority earning more than $25,000 per year. Most live in Manatee County and 74% were members of the church, with 61% f those being members less than 10 years. Eighty-one per cent traveled less than 30 minutes to church. 64% attend the traditional worship service and 14 % prefer the contemporary service. They feel that the sermons and music are usually relevant and meaningful.
Specific demographics: 55% male, 72% over 50 years of age, 31% between 40 and 50 years of age, 23% reported having professional degrees, 60% reported having a baccalaureate degree or higher. On the issue of residence, 92% reported living here year-round (the survey was done at a time when “snow birds were mostly absent) and 32% are retired. Eighty-one percent reported being white, 49% reported being gay, and 33% reported being lesbian.
From the answers to open-ended questions it can be summarized that people in our church are welcoming to all. People feel accepted, included in all activities, and provided with spiritual support openly. The congregation sees its priorities as spiritual growth and outreach. They did say that the Board of Directors needs to be more communicative with the congregation.
In the financial area, 95% reported feeling responsible to support COTT, 80% reported that the expectation to pledge is reasonable, yet only 35% actually pledge. Ninety-six % felt responsible to volunteer their services, but far fewer actually do. |
